NFR (Northeast Frontier Railway) has installed a radar technology at rail-cum road Saraighatbridge recently. This installation is a significant part of a nationwide program to espouse advanced technology. The purpose of this technology is to alert railways about the abnormal increase in the level of water of main rivers.
Leading public relations officer of NFR, Pranav Jyoti Sharma educate that this system will automatically monitor the level of water in the Brahmaputra River. The system continuously monitors the level of water and send alters via SMS to pre-determined phones at particular intervals.
This automatic system is better than the manual recording mode. Soon this system will be a part of TMS (track management system), as per Sharma. As per Sharma, this system will be installed on ten conduits within NFR. He revealed that railway-men who are looking after this system might get alert signals as the level of water in a river crosses the level of danger. The services of the train may suitably regulate to remove the danger.
The electromagnetic waves produced in this system are crossed through the air, reaches the surface of the water, and comes back to a sensor. Distance amid the water surface and instrument is calculated from total travel period of waves. It provides a reliable and accurate level of water. From location, the data directly goes to a master system via GPRS. Alert signs are mechanically sent to cellular phones and TMS via a network based on the internet.
NFR Officials are recently helping flood-affected individuals in Northeastern areas of the country. Heavy showers caused massive damage in several districts of Assam and Tripura. The NFR offered food to distressed people and allowed them to live in spare coaches and railway stations.
Radar System for Measurement of Water Flow
Water level monitoring stations are equipped to measure the level of water in different ways. These readings are used with the rating of water flow to estimate flow consistently. The level is measurable with sensors, blubber or pressure. A sensor can be an excellent choice when water structure or a bridge is available to mount. Unlike other monitoring systems, the whole radar system is safe from debris because you can mount it above from the water.
Sensors of radar level may mount to an extension arm, pipeline, frame or a bridge above water. It is useful to determine the level of water based on its distance from the surface. Antennas receive and transmit pulses from the water surface. A transmitting antenna transmits short pulses from radar and receiving antennas receives specific pulses reflected from the surface of the water. The delay of transmission time to the receiver is relative to the space between water surface and sensor.
Radar-based Sensor Technology
Sensors of radar level may not deliver with the similar accuracy as pressure transducers or blubber sensors. The non-contact radar sensor uses advanced technology that provides the accuracy USGS requirements of +/-0.01 feet with a distance ranging up to 115 feet of the surface of the water.
The technology of pulse radar may work well in remote areas and for standard measurement. The IP67 waterproof sensor consumes low power so it will be an excellent choice for the solar-charged monitoring system.
Dual antennas are surrounded in one compact housing and convey pulses toward the surface of the water. A sampling 16 Hz/ second with averaging of 20-second decrease conditions of water surface like turbulence and waves. The advanced radar sensors may not need calibration, and these remain unaffected by contaminated water, floating debris, flood events, humidity, and temperature.
Importance of Radar System on River
For political, social and economic security, the quantification of water flow is necessary. Rivers and streams provide water for recreation, power generation, navigation, irrigation and drinking water. Excessive water can become a problem for the safety of the public because rivers can overflow their inundate infrastructure, breach levees, and banks.
Flow data is essential for the computation of water loads, flow and level. The available water for several uses and prediction of damaging floods depend on accurate measurements of the flow rate in rivers under varying conditions.
Without any doubt, water is an essential resource for humans. It is necessary to take measurements of the water level frequently. Modern sensing technology can give accurate measurements and decrease the wastage of water. With the help of the advanced radar-based system, it will become easy for management to predict flood and take necessary measures to prevent significant losses.
Tawang Railway NFR Project
The NFR (Northeastern Frontier Railway) officials informed that they are taking up Tenga-Bhalukpong-Tawang railway line to Arunachal Pradesh. This project is strategically important to decrease the travel time of Tawang. The current distance of the road from Bhalukpong – Tawang is almost 285 Kms. The new railway line can reduce this distance for the convenience of travelers.
They have proposed dual lane roads along with tunnels to designed on the railway line to drastically decrease the distance of the road. The officials of NFR informed that they are doing a survey in Arunachal Pradesh on railway lines. These lines are Tinsukia-Pasighat, Deomali-Naharkatia, Dangri-Roing, Dumduma-Wakro via Simaluguri-Kanubari.
NFR is currently working on radar-based system and upgradation of railway tracks. Floods are one of the natural hazards, but they can become catastrophic without proper control. If you can use a suitable system to make measurements in advance in targeted areas, you can decrease potential losses. Changes in the use of land of floodplain induced by the embankment of a river. It may result in hydrological effects.
The flood extension can affect the dynamic behavior of a river associated with the increase in the hazard of breaks in the embankment. The risk of flood is easy to minimize with the wise use of landscape and radar-based system. The consistent measurements of water level can alert management to take necessary actions. NFR is planning to install this system in almost all rivers to decrease the chances of calamities. They are consistently replacing their manual system to increase the efficiency of NFR.
